CBS, Univision top tame Tuesday

Auds flock to CBS drama ''NCIS'' even in repeat, as Tuesday's encore was easily the night's No. 1 program in key demos and total viewers. The net's annual airing of the ''Kennedy Center Honors'' drew typically lackluster numbers and was down sharply vs. last year. According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, CBS opened well with ''NCIS'' (2.1 rating/6 share in adults 18-49, 12.5 million viewers overall), but ''The Kennedy Center Honors'' settled for a 1.1/3 in the demo and 8.4 million viewers overall. This matches the show's lowest 18-49 result to date and was down 27% from last year's 1.5. CBS won the night in 18-49 (tied with Univision), 25-54 and total viewers. Univision earned a share of firstin 18-49 behind a two-hour episode of ''Una Familia Con Suerte (A Fortunate Family)'' (1.7/5 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall). In the 10 o'clock hour, ''Aqui y Ahora'' did a 1.0/3 in 18-49 and 2.4 million viewers overall. Elsewhere, ABC did OK with repeats of comedies ''Last Man Standing'' (1.5/4 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall at 8 p.m. and 1.5/4 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall at 8:30), ''The Middle'' (1.4/4 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) and ''Suburgatory'' (1.2/3 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall), followed by an encore of crime drama ''Body of Proof'' (1.1/3 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall). ABC's comedies certainly repeated better than Fox's, as ''Glee'' (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.2 million viewers overall), ''New Girl'' (1.0/3 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall) and ''Raising Hope'' (0.9/2 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall) put up puny numbers. NBC similarly struggled on the night with repeats of the special ''The Biggest Loser: Where Are They Now?'' (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall) and drama ''Parenthood'' (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.0 million viewers overall). Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS and Univision, 1.4/4; ABC, 1.3/4; NBC and Fox, 0.8/2; CW, 0.3/1. In total viewers: CBS, 9.7 million; ABC, 5.1 million; Univision, 3.4 million; NBC, 2.7 million; Fox, 2.5 million; CW, 0.9 million. Contact Rick Kissell at rick.kissell@variety.com

George Lucas's Indy 5 MacGuffin Problem, and 5 Other Stories You'll be Talking About Today

Happy Tuesday! Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: The plug is pulled on Paradise Lost (for now)… A pair of Weinstein award horses sniff the backlash… Universal gets back in the Angelina Jolie business… and more. · I guess that George Lucas being out of ideas barely counts as news, but for the record: There’s still no real peg to hang Indiana Jones 5’s story on. Or, in Lucas’s words: “I told [Steven Spielberg] about the story, but I really haven’t found the MacGuffin yet. I mean, I know what it’s about, but I just have to find a MacGuffin that fits into the arena we’re working in.” Poor George is stumped! Can anybody out there help old Stumpy MacGuffin? [Vulture] · “STUNNER! Legendary Pictures Postpones January Start Of Alex Proyas-Directed Paradise Lost,” shouts the headline at our sister site Deadline. I mean, totally! Why would anyone think twice about letting Alex Proyas go a reported 15 percent over a $120 million budget to adapt John Milton’s poem with **Bradley Cooper **in the lead? Come on! Be stunned, already. [Deadline] · I’m no conspiracy theorist, but… Oh, who the hell am I kidding: The timing of this slur campaign against My Week With Marilyn — in which the son of Marilyn Monroe’s former manager calls the film’s source material “a complete lie” and even prompts skepticism from lead actress Michelle Williams herself — is a little strange as critics awards and the Golden Globes hammer out their favorites of 2011. Of course, The Weinstein Company has both this film and the Best Actress frontrunner The Iron Lady. Harvey wouldn’t sabotage one for the other’s sake, would he? [LAT via Moviefone] · Also experiencing the early stages of backlash: The Artist. Here’s Glenn Kenny: “[T]he fact that this movie is being proclaimed the Best Film of 2011 by various critics’ groups is literally — there’s no other word for it — insane.” Worth a read, and don’t worry: No Uggies were harmed in the writing of this review. [Some Came Running] · Universal, which has ridden the Angelina Jolie express to both box-office glory (Wanted) and Oscar-night recognition (Changeling), is back in business with the superstar and director Luc Besson. The studio will distribute the duo’s untitled “large-scale dramatic thriller” — with sci-fi elements — which commences shooting next spring. [Deadline] · This tribute to Charles Grodin’s late-night TV legend is the best possible procrastination device I can offer you today. The Johnny Carson exchange alone —”I’m just looking for warm bodies!” — will brighten your day immeasurably. [Splitsider]

"All-American Muslim is propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values," it said. On its Web site, the Association posted an email from a Lowe's representative saying: "While we continue to advertise on various cable networks, including TLC, there are certain programs that do not meet Lowe's advertising guidelines, including the show you brought to our attention. Lowe's will no longer be advertising on that program." On its Twitter feed, the home improvement retail company said Friday in response to a tweet: "We did not pull our ads based solely on the complaints or emails of any one group. It is never our intent to alienate anyone. Bradley Cooper Eager to Shoot 'Hangover III'; Says Todd Phillips Is Working on Script (Video)

Veteran filmmaker Bruce Beresford has signed on to develop and direct Taliesin, a film about fabled American architect Frank Lloyd Wright from writer Nicholas Meyer. our editor recommendsRon Burkle Buys Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House for Just Under $4.5 Mil The title refers to the architect's former home and studio in rural Spring Green, Wis., where the key events in the film take place. The rambling hillside compound, considered a masterpiece of Prairie-style architecture, was the focus of scandal as Wright built it for himself and his married mistress Martha "Mamah" Cheney. In 1914, while Wright was away, a domestic worker murdered Cheney, her two children and four others by locking them inside and setting fire to the building. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Biggest Real Estate Deals of the Week: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Hudson, Robert De Niro "It's a very good script," Beresford toldThe Hollywood Reporter. "It doesn't cover his whole life, just a small section of it, and it doesn't whitewash him into some sort of saint." Beresford, who directed the best picture Oscar winner Driving Miss Daisy (1990) and was nominated for best director for Tender Mercies (1983), says he sparked to telling the tale of the private life of one of the greatest architects ever. "There's a documentary by Ken Burns [the 1998 film, Frank Lloyd Wright] that's quite good, but it's odd that there's never been a [feature] film about him," Beresford said. Producers J. Todd Harris, of Branded Pictures Entertainment, and Chicago-based Ed Bachrach, of Kartemquin Films, sent Beresford the script. They are currently raising money for the project, and Beresford has recently been scouting locations in and around Chicago. Hide

Carla Gugino in "Hide"Filmed in New Orleans by Stephanie Germain Prods. Executive producer, Germain; producer, Christopher Morgan; director, John Gray; writer, Janet Brownell; based on the novel by Lisa Gardner.Detective D.D. Warren - Carla Gugino Det. Bobby Dodge - Kevin Alejandro Alex Wilson - Mark-Paul Gosselaar Annabelle - Bridget ReganTNT's "Mystery Movie Night" is certainly a throwback to the olden days of TV movies, but do the projects actually have to be plucked directly out of a time machine? Enter "Hide," a grim, nasty and almost comically overheated potboiler, featuring Carla Gugino as a Boston detective investigating the mummified remains of six young women. It's a mystery, it's a workplace romantic triangle, it's two taste treats in one. While it's nice to see made-fors making a mini-comeback, it won't last long if they're as dunderheaded as this one. The bodies are found in an abandoned mental hospital, and D.D. Warren (Gugino) and fellow detective Bobby Ridge (Kevin Alejandro) are quickly on the case. Oh yes, and they're also sleeping together, but without any commitment because, as D.D. explains, "I am in love. With this. With what I do." Having not read Lisa Gardner's novel, let's assume writer Janet Brownell tried to be faithful to the tone, but it thoroughly flummoxed her and director John Gray, who have concocted a movie filled with stilted dialogue and improbable twists and turns. Most of them center on a mysterious woman named Annabelle (Bridget Regan) with a vague past who becomes part of the case, and a potential target for the shadowy killer. D.D. also picks up a new investigator, Alex (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), who almost immediately feels at liberty to psychoanalyze her relationship with Bobby when he isn't helping seek clues. If their banter is supposed to be flirty, the real mystery is why she doesn't mace him the first time the bozo starts insinuating himself into her head. All of this builds toward a breathless climax ridiculous even by the conventions of the thriller genre. It's almost worth watching for the last 15 minutes just for giggles. Although Gugino has been good in many things, it's hard to figure out what she's trying to convey with this role, playing a presumably hard-bitten detective as if she's a kittenish Jessica Rabbit. Then again, that's probably over-thinking things, which is something nobody will accuse the filmmakers of doing. Many doubtless harbor fond memories of the "Mystery Movie" wheel, and TNT -- with its lineup of mostly meat-and-potatoes series -- deserves kudos for trying to revive that nostalgic franchise for a new generation. Something like "Hide," though, is no way to jump-start the genre -- unless the goal is to try hiding in plain sight.Camera, James Chressanthis; production designer, Jaymes Hinkle; editor, Neil Mandelberg; music, Michael A. Defense Secretary Invites Dancing Champ J.R. Martinez To The Pentagon

First Published: November 25, 2011 3:55 PM EST Credit: Getty Images WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Caption J.R. Martinez from the cast of Dancing With The Stars proudly shows off his trophy on the set of Good Morning America in NY City on November 23, 2011 Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has invited soldier-turned-actor J.R. Martinez, winner of this seasons Dancing with the Stars competition, to meet him at the Pentagon. During a 10-minute telephone call Friday, Panetta told the dance champion he demonstrated the strength and resilience of wounded veterans, Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said. Martinez credited his military training for his performance on the ABC show, Kirby said. Martinez and professional partner Karina Smirnoff bested fellow finalists Rob Kardashian and Ricki Lake in the finale broadcast Tuesday. Martinez, 28, was severely burned over more than 40 percent of his body when the Humvee he was driving for the U.S. Army in Iraq struck a land mine in 2003. After dozens of operations during a nearly three-year recovery, Martinez became a motivational speaker and in 2008 won a role on the now-retired ABC soap opera All My Children. Netflix Bringing Back Arrested Development

First Published: November 19, 2011 2:41 PM EST Credit: Getty Images Caption Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, Jason Bateman, Jessica Walter and Portia de Rossi at a script reading for Foxs Arrested Development in 2004NY, N.Y. -- Arrested Development is coming back to life on the Netflix video streaming service. The quirky TV comedy series is resuming production and will be available for instant viewing by Netflix subscribers in 2013, the company announced late Friday. Arrested Development aired on Fox for three seasons from 2003 to 2006. The Emmy-winning show focused on the formerly wealthy Bluth family and featured Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Michael Cera and Jeffrey Tambor in its cast. Netflix didnt specify which original cast members might be returning or say how many new episodes were planned. Twentieth Century Fox Television and Imagine Television will produce these new episodes for the online subscription service, reviving the series five years after the Fox broadcast network pulled the plug. Imagine Entertainment co-founders Ron Howard and Brian Grazer noted that bringing a series back fromcancellation almost never happens. But then, Arrested always was about as unconventional as they get, so it seems totally appropriate that this show that broke the mold is smashing it to pieces once again, they said. Earlier this year, Netflix announced that House of Cards, a new political drama starring Kevin Spacey, will be produced for viewing on the service in 2012. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. Fashion Slam: Ho! Ho! Ho? No! No! No!

First Released: November 16, 2011 2:53 PM EST Credit: Getty Images La, Calif. -- Caption It is not a situation of Bah, Humbugs! But, how come people beginning to celebrate the holiday season so early? Its already commenced. Christmas non-stop. Thats the e-mail I acquired yesterday in one of my co-employees letting me know a nearby radio station began playing holiday tunes 24/7. I seem like I usually say this, however i swear, the Christmas Holidays begins earlier and earlier each year. No Bah, Humbugs from me, Im no Scrooge or even the Grinch, I Really Like Christmas! But even I'm bothered because when honoring the holiday season has spread from December to November and today October. (Poor Thanksgiving has completely become lost within the shuffle!) I visited the La shopping complex, The Grove, around the weekend BEFORE Halloween plus they were already setting up the huge Christmas Tree. A few little shows here or there does not bother me so muchbut a 110-feet tree, plus Santas Cottage (hes already open for business) along with a existence-size Santa and sleigh flying within the Groves large pond, well, thats holidayd-to-the-hilt. My hubby joked that soon well start honoring Christmas in This summer. In the rate situations are going, Id state that hes not too remote! Fireworks and eggnog, oh boy, cant wait! I were not impressed with the Christmas tree rising so early to my boss and that he stated, well, they're doing that because merchants actually need the company throughout the challenging economy. Point taken, but couldnt we a minimum of work through Halloween? I really like Nordstrom. Each year they postpone setting up holiday adornments until Black Friday. How refreshing! Santacan we now have much more of that!? Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Corporation. All privileges reserved. These components might not be released, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Critic's Guide to Wednesday TV: The SNL Comedy Invasion, A New Whitechapel Case, and More!

Molly Shannon Lost in all this week's understandable hubbub over NBC putting Community on midseason hiatus - and no, I'm not happy about it, either - was the welcome news that NBC is at least doing the right thing by its freshman sleeper comedy Up All Night and moving it to Thursdays come January, swapping time periods with Whitney. (What took them so long?) On this week's new episode (8/7c), yet another Saturday Night Live alum makes a guest appearance: the reliably side-splitting Molly Shannon as Reagan's less-than-Superstar assistant Nancy, who Reagan (Christina Applegate) can't bring herself to fire. This is followed by a repeat (8:30/7:30c) featuring SNL vet Will Forte in a very funny turn as a neighbor giving Chris (Will Arnett) ludicrous sex tips on how to put the spice back in their baby-burdened marriage. The same episode features a cameo by Jorma Taccone (of SNL's The Lonely Island troupe) as Maya's excitable ex-boyfriend. The SNL invasion into prime time continues over on ABC's broadly satirical Suburgatory (8:30/7:30c), with Ana Gasteyer chewing the scenery as wacky neighbor Sheila Shay, who this week nurses a cowed George (Jeremy Sisto) back to health after he throws out his back. Meanwhile, Tessa (Jane Levy) watches her new suburban support system go overboard to throw her a "Super Sweet Sixteen" party when all she wanted was a little get-together. Want more fall TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! There's another copycat killer on the loose as BBC America's gripping crime thriller Whitechapel (10/9c) begins a new three-episode arc. And while the Kray twins (whose gangster crime spree was a '60s sensation) aren't quite as notorious on these shores as Jack the Ripper, the murders and maimings echoing the Kray mayhem are just as gut-churning a challenge for DI Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones), still smarting from his reputation as "the man who failed to find the Ripper." He is further upstaged by rising star DCI Cazenove (Peter Serafinowicz), the head of the Organized Crime unit, who tells Chandler, "You're chasing phantoms again," in an attempt to take over the case. Which makes Chandler even more committed to dig in his heels, despite his deputy's warning that "Some cases can be too interesting." As in dangerous. There's no end to the lurid nonsense on FX's American Horror Story (10/9c), which tonight introduces us to yet another bad seed in the haunted house's unhappy family history. (Never go in the attic, or the cellar, would seem to be the smartest advice. But do they ever listen?) There's another rape-ish sex fantasy - or is it? - involving the rubber-suited ghoul, and if you can't see where one sordid subplot is headed, in which housekeeper Moira (the sexy Alexandra Breckenridge version) seduces a prospective buyer for the house, then you must have missed those last truly terrible seasons of Nip/Tuck. Which is what every single episode of this ridiculous Horror Story reminds me of. Jessica Lange, however, continues to absolutely kill it as the increasingly sinister neighbor lady Constance, who this week gets to state one of the show's apparent themes as she observes how in today's crowded cities, there is no respect for what came before, and we risk "building on top of somebody else's life." Her warning to the potential new buyer: "You should stop unearthing while you're ahead. It only brings a haunting." But do they ever listen? A much more satisfying guilty pleasure can be had on ABC's Revenge (10/9c), promising "Treachery" in this week's episode title. Which really wouldn't be anything new for this show. The arrival on the scene of Amanda Clarke (aka the real Emily Thorne, who swapped identities with our heroine in prison) should only muddy the Hamptons waters further. But the Graysons are busy freaking over what Lydia might remember as she continues to recover from her shoulda-been-fatal fall. Good times. So what else is on? ... A particularly timely episode of PBS' Nature (check local listings) for this Thanksgiving season is titled "My Life as a Turkey," the story of artist/naturalist Joe Hutto (portrayed by Jeff Palmer), who imprints himself on a newly hatched family of turkey chicks and is not prepared for the consequences. ... There's yet another double elimination on this addictive season of CBS' Survivor: South Pacific (8/7c), with a key alliance in danger of shredding, while on Redemption Island, one of the three alpha males battling it out makes what CBS calls "a bold threat to his former tribemates." ... My favorite character from CBS' Criminal Minds (9/8c), Kirsten Vangsness' Garcia, takes center stage in an episode involving the disappearance of a friend (Army Wives' Brigid Brannagh) from her survivor's support group, who vanishes seven years to the day that her daughter went missing. Heroes' Jack Coleman guests as another member of Garcia's group. ... Natasha Lyonne guests on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10/9c) as a mental patient who may or may not have been raped. A witness says she was, but she denies it. Carrie Preston, so memorably amusing as a deceptively ditzy lawyer on a recent episode of The Good Wife, appears as Lyonne's aunt. ... Norm Macdonald returns to ABC's The Middle (8/7c) as sketchy Uncle Rusty, while Frankie and Sue join a community theater production of The Wizard of Oz that clearly accepts all volunteers, though with Poor Sue, you never know how long that will last. Again, good times. Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

'Sherlock Holmes' Set Visit: 'Game Of Shadows' Is 'Bigger And Better'

What else could you expect in the approaching "A Virtual DetectiveInch follow up, "A Virtual Detective: Bet on Shadows"? Well, based on director Guy Ritchie, you may expect everything to become "bigger and.Inch MTV News was lucky enough to get mind towards the London group of the film in The month of january to talk with Ritchie and leading males Robert Downey Junior. and Jude Law concerning the latest installment within their steam punk-esque, action-packed franchise. Ritchie stated that this time around around you may expect everything to become a little more extreme because now he "knows the identity" of his colorful figures. "I supposed I stuck my foot within the water artistically around the 4g iphone. I am most likely a bit more confident about who these men are," Ritchie stated. The very first "A Virtual DetectiveInch only agreed to be a tease to setup the approaching conflict with classic Holmes villain, Professor James Moriarty. Ritchie drawn on Jared Harris, most widely known for his roles in "Mad Males" and "Great Murders," to experience the item of Holmes' obsession. And, out of the box a great register any casting process, Ritchie is a nice large fan of getting Harris within the film. "I am not to imply this since it is what company directors are meant to say, but I do think Jared is an excellent Moriarty, and you're simply coping with perhaps probably the most infamous villain within the good reputation for literature, therefore it is no mean task," Ritchie stated. But in the centre from the film may be the great chemistry between leading males Downey Junior. and Law. Apparently the 2 are a handful of pretty large troublemakers on set, and there is no telling what effect filming a scene may have in it. "We have done stuff which we are cracking up over and that we think is really funny, and that we watch it go back over and actually, it is extremely touching," Law stated. "We believe, 'Where did which come from?' And the other way around, we'll do stuff we are frantically attempting to make this sincere moment, and it is simply broad and extremely funny." Downey agreed, "It is a discovery process." Are you currently searching toward "A Virtual Detective: A Game Title of Shadows"? Inform us within the comments section below or on Twitter!

Who Should Replace Brett Ratner?

After Brett Ratner’s spectacular self-caused demise as Oscarcast producer, the Academy will get lower to business getting a alternative to become listed on Don Mischer in obtaining the pieces. I’ve heard speculation varying from Scott Sanders (who had been eyed before Ratner got the jerk) to previous Oscar producers Joe Roth, Adam Shankman and Laurence Mark. Harvey Weinstein offered an as they are suggestion last evening. Weinstein, that has sitting through lots of Oscarcasts, recommended drafting Saturday Evening Live producer Lorne Michaels, and becoming Tina Fey active in the writing. The concept is that they will make Eddie Murphy comfortable and provide the broadcast a powerful comic focus. I’m unsure Michaels or Fey could spare time from their weekly show obligations in NY, though. Who should make the show?

Will Justin Timberlake Sing for your Coen Brothers and sisters in 'Inside Llewyn Davis'

As Moviefone happily mentioned on Friday, Justin Timberlake was formerly a relatively effective music artist. Who understood, right?! Wonderful his acting performances throughout the past few years (both positive and negative hey, 'Love Guru'!), it's sometimes easy to forget that JT is certainly a proficient singer, accountable for top Top-40 singles in the last decade. ("Cry Us a River": still awesome.) Which is why Timberlake's potential participation inside the Coen brothers's 'Inside Llewyn Davis' so intriguing: the film is among the '60s folk scene in NY's Greenwich Village, and Timberlake could find themselves playing a folk music artist if he accepts the Oscar-winning brothers's offer. Translation: cell phone industry's colliding! Variety reviews that Joel and Ethan Coen have extended an offer to Timberlake to star as Carey Mulligan's onscreen husband, a singer named Jim. Oscar Isaac ('Drive') plays the titular Davis, a fighting NY music artist who can't settle the debts despite immense talent. Hardly any other particulars are known presently, but considering simply how much music the Coens found in 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' it seems logical you may anticipate 'Inside Llewyn Davis' being chockablock with tunes. With Timberlake and Mulligan -- who not only sang with Belle & Sebastian, but supplies a show-stopping performance of "NY, NY" in 'Shame' -- aboard, you will probably have an interest the soundtrack. 'Boots' takes Friday B.O.

Judging by early Friday grosses, "Puss in Boots" will take the top spot at the weekend box office. Observers say the Paramount-Dreamworks Animation 3D pic should gross in the mid-thirties. Depending on how Friday-night crowds turn out, though, the film could see slightly higher earnings of around $38 million. For comparative numbers, "Puss in Boots" was tracking below DWA's 2010 fall entry "Megamind," which opened to $46 million during the weekend of Nov. 5. Twentieth Century Fox's "In Time," with an expected three-day perf of $12 million to $13 million, should beat FilmDistrict's "Rum Diary." B.O. observers expect Johnny Depp-toplined "Diary" to gross between $6 million and $8 million -- not surprising given the film's limited target demo. Some tracking services from earlier this week suggested the pic could earn between $8 million and $11 million, based on the popularity of Johnny Depp. Contact Rachel Abrams at Rachel.Abrams@variety.com

Mitsuko Provides (Hara go kore nande)

A "Mitsuko Provides" Film Partners production. (Worldwide sales: Pony Canyon, Tokyo, japan.) Created by Hiroshi Kogure, Sachiko Sone, Yuichi Shibahara. Directed, compiled by Yuya Ishii. With: Riisa Naka, Aoi Nakamura, Ryo Ishibashi, Keiko Saito, Miyoko Inagawa. (Japanese, British dialogue)Although transported by Riisa Naka's powerful perf like a demon-may-care pregnant lady, "Mitsuko Provides" is definitely an awkward Japanese comedy that frequently feels as though hard labor. Helmer Yuya Ishii's rising-star status was cemented this past year using the frequent fest play of "Sawako Decides," that also featured an idiosyncratic femme, which latest effort follows the fest route of his earlier endeavors. But commercial prospects inside or outdoors Japan look harsh. Mitsuko Provides Potential kicked out, pregnant Mitsuko (Naka) telephones her Tokyo, japan-dwelling parents, striving to convince them she's not nearby but nonetheless residing in the U.S. She finds digs in the pub where she was raised after which reconnects together with her childhood acquaintances so she will increase their lives, whether or not they enjoy it or otherwise. Script's central conceit is the fact that Mitsuko comes with an inner tranquility, but in reality she just bullies everybody. While Naka's performance creates smiles, the general effect is a script not aware of their internal contradictions. Helming includes a boxy tube look, with tech credits to complement.Digital camera (color, HD), Yukihiro Okimura editor, Naoichiro Sagara music, Takashi Watanabe production designer, Tomoyuki Maruo. Examined at Busan Film Festival (A Window on Asian Cinema), March. 13, 2011. (Also working in london, Tokyo, japan, Vancouver film festivals.) Running time: 109 MIN. Sino VOD bandwagon

"Mr. Popper's Penguins" is one of several films that 20th Century Fox will offer on VOD in China beginning next month. McCabeWith companies looking to grow the video-on-demand market in China, they're starting to lock down deals with Hollywood, with 20th Century Fox the latest of the majors to make its homevideo titles available in the region.Fox Home Entertainment has inked a deal with Joy.cn to provide new releases and library fare to the website's pay-per-view service Hollywood Theater. Site launched in 2008.New films can be viewed for 5 yuan (about 80), while older pics can be viewed for 3 yuan (50).The price may seem low, but it proved necessary in a country known for rampant piracy. "If you want to take away all barriers to do something legitimate, fighting piracy with a good price point can be pretty effective," said Jamie McCabe, executive VP or worldwide PPV, VOD and electronic sell through for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.First slate of Fox titles to go live on Joy.cn next month as new releases include "Black Swan," "127 Hours," "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son," "Cedar Rapids," "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules," "Gulliver's Travels," "Monte Carlo," "Mr. Popper's Penguins," "Water for Elephants" and "Win Win."There will also be about 100 titles available from the Fox library. Joy.cn also has films from Sony and Disney.Fox becomes the third studio in a year to lock down VOD pacts in China, eyeing the 1.3 billion population there as a major potential revenue source for PPV coin.Until now, the studios had been worried about their films being pirated in the region, which has lost them tens of millions per title in the past. But the VOD offerings have pledged to thwart piracy with anti-piracy technology in order to land more content.Fox already brokered a deal with Chinese online video service Sohu Video to license 400 films over the next three years. Sony had a deal with VOD provider Anyplex to provide films via the on-demand service through Internet connected integrated digital TV (iDTV) and a set-top boxes. It's had a VOD presence in China since 2005.And Warner Bros., in June, inked a deal with pay-TV service YOU On Demand to provide PPV titles, starting with the "Harry Potter" franchise, through cable and IPTV services in China. "There are a lot of companies that are in the VOD business in China," said McCabe, who recently met with 16 of the firms while on a trip to the country. "We wanted to make sure we reward those who are doing the right thing and have a good service," McCabe said. Joy.cn "checked a lot of the boxes."That includes deploying anti-piracy methods.Piracy once ran rampant in Korea, but when legitimate services launched to take advantage of the high-speed internet available there, the country became "our third or fourth biggest market in the world," McCabe said. "Intuitively, you could say, 'Let's give up and focus our energies elsewhere,' but when there are good services, good content and an attractive price," consumers will show up. Milan court rejects charges against Silvio

ROME - A Milan court on Tuesday ruled against indicting Silvio Berlusconi in a tax fraud case centered around multimillion-dollar Hollywood movie rights purchased by the Italian premier and media mogul's Mediaset TV empire. But the court did indict Berlusconi's son, Mediaset VP Pier Silvio Berlusconi, as well as Mediaset chairman Fedele Confalonieri and nine other defendants in the so-called Mediatrade case The long-simmering case centers around an alleged scheme to inflate the price of TV rights to a large volume of U.S. movies bought by Mediaset's Mediatrade unit from Hollywood studios, including Paramount and Fox, via offshore companies, evading tax and creating a slush fund. The trial is set to start Dec. 22 in Milan. In throwing out the case Milan magistrate Maria Vicidomini ruled that Silvio Berlusconi had not committed an offense. In a statement Mediaset said the trial will also prove the innocence of Berlusconi fils, Confalonieri and the other defendants. Silvio Berlusconi's legal woes are now lighter, though he still faces three trials in Milan on charges including corruption, tax fraud, and accusations that he paid for sex with an underage girl. Berlusconi, who has proclaimed his innocence in all three active cases and claimed to be a victim of politically motivated prosecutors, has faced 25 trials since becoming a pol in 1994, but has either been acquitted or let off because the statute of limitations expired. Choked (Gasi)

A Korean Academy of Fine Arts presentation in association with CJ Entertainment of a Korean Academy of Fine Arts production. (International sales: CJ Entertainment, Seoul.) Produced by Kafa Film. Directed, written by Kim Joong-hyun.With: Um Tae-goo, Kil Hae-yeon, Yoon Chae-young, Park Se-jin, Yoon Su-ah.Stifling, repetitious atmosphere and a confusing script about two women arguing over a debt dull the impact of the robust perfs in "Choked." Film-school grad Kim Joong-hyun makes a generally auspicious bow here, but pic lacks the polish of other prominent student films, like "Member of the Funeral" and "Bleak Night," which have made a splash in Busan's New Currents strand. A Euro fest tour awaits. After a weight-loss-product pyramid scheme goes awry, charming middle-aged mother Hee-su (Kil Hae-yeon) goes on the lam, leaving her debts to her grown son, Youn-ho (Um Tae-goo). Volatile divorcee Seo-hee (Park Se-jin) is determined to recover the money owed, and is convinced Youn-ho is shielding his mother. Authentic thesping captures the essence of characters caught in a loop of blame and irresponsibility, and the actors' frequent explosions of hysteria and violence impress. But lack of dramatic progress suggests writer-helmer Kim is as stuck as his characters in terms of where to go with the story, and his docu-like style and near-sepia HD lensing make for a draining and ultimately unrewarding experience.Camera (color, HD), Lee Jin-keun; editor, Park Young-sam; music, Kim Mok-in; production designer, Hur Seo-hyung. New Teaser For 11-11-11 Online

The gateway will open, and...Slightly peculiar this: in keeping with the general oddness of the film, the marketing campaign for 11-11-11 seems to be running backwards. We've already had a full trailer, but now here's a new 11-11-11 teaser. We almost didn't think it worth mentioning, but then the punchline made us laugh. You'll need to enter your date-of-birth, due to its NSFW-ness.Previous clips have been all-over-the-place weird, which perhaps explains the straightforward voice-over and jokiness here, although there's not much in the way of actual footage. What we know to expect is a surreal barrage of numerological horror strangeness, heralding what we're told is an entity from another world arriving on Earth through Heaven's eleventh gate on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, 2011.Michael Landes is the guy with the hard luck story who gradually realises that a pair of elevens is cropping up all over the place, portending Something Bad. Google Wrapping Up Groundbreaking Deals To Launch 25+ Professionally Produced YouTube Channels: Debut In January

EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that Google has put Hollywood on notice to keep mum as it prepares to announceitsbig plan to redefine YouTube with 25 or so channels that will offer professionally produced news, information and entertainment. Google plans to spend an estimated $150M for the services — top tier channels would get about $5M apiece.I’m told that the search giant wantsto unveil its initial slate of channels by the end of this month. They’d go live in January.YouTube is gearing up to announce additional channels in January that would be up around April.Partners expected in the the first round includeWarner Bros., ShineReveille, BermanBraun, FremantleMedia, and skate boarder Tony Hawk. But Google has insisted that partners sign non-disclosure agreements — and has warned that those identified publicly before things are official might be cut out of the announcement. There’s also lots of skittishness because Google will control the promotion and ad sales for many of the channels. Google plans to recoup its investments from ad sales, and then split revenues with the content producers. But Google’s still engaged in severalsimultaneous negotiations as content providers look to strike different deals. For example, major studios and networks insisted on using their own ad teams — in part to avoid conflicts with their existing TV or Web advertisers. In another major concession, Google has agreed to let content providers retain ownership rights to their productions. Although Google’s still trying to keep details of the project under wraps, CEO Larry Page told analysts in an earnings call yesterday that YouTube is well positioned to help content creators “find the right users, and get paid both through advertising and directly. And so I think that’s just a logical place for us to be in, and a logical place where you’ll see a lot of activity in general.”

World War Z Faces Real Gun Drama

Anti-terrorist team raids weapon storeWhile the experience while watching camera of Kaira Pitt's latest, World War Z, involves people running fromOreliminating nasty undead types, the drama behind it's turning to be just like intense. The most recent incident? A load of weapons that were planned to be used through the production continues to be confiscated by Hungarian government bodies included in an anti-terrorism mission. And also the real trouble with the guns? Works out that rather than the securely neutralised good examples that will avoid anybody getting hurt, the photographers remained as greatly functional. "Today a personal plane introduced guns covered with a parcel from the company for an individual [in Budapest," stated Hajdu Janos, director from the Anti-Terrorism Unit inside a statement acquired through the Warmth Vision Blog. "Guns such as these are highly illegal to move even when these were used as stage guns, which hopefully they were not." Whoops does not really start to pay for it...It is not the very first problem to possess befallen to adaptation of Max Brook's sprawling zombie conflict tome. Fans from the book have previously were not impressed with the script's change to some more positive story which finds Pitt's UNworker now knee-deep in fighting the undead menace. Plus, based on Us Weekly, the film, with Marc Forster in the helm, has become over budget and behind schedule after getting already shot in Glasgow. Pitt is apparently "furious" though we'll be taking that certain having a hefty serving of salt since Us Weekly is not exactly noted for the searing precision in the confirming on any celebrity problem...

The Simpsons Cast Near to Signing Deal But Exactly How Much Can They Make?

The Simpsons It appears such as the Simpsons may continue their hijinks on Fox. The cast from the longest-running prime-time scripted series is near to signing an offer, which keeps them around the air for just one more year, based on the Hollywood Reporter. The brand new deal will not reduce their salaries around the 45 percent pay cut Fox initially required, but it won't include any revenue pay. The Simpsons' Harry Shearer: I am prepared to have a 70 % pay cut in return for profits On Monday, it had been reported the stars - Serta Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Cruz, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer - suggested a 30 % pay cut in return for half the normal commission from the show's back-finish profits, including distribution and retailing. But that provide was quickly declined through the network. Early Friday, Shearer spoke out against Fox, saying he'd have a pay cut as huge as 70 % to be able to obtain a share from the sitcom's hefty profits. Shearer stated there have been "virtually no conditions to which the network would consider permitting me or the stars to talk about within the show's success." Fox gives Simpsons stars an ultimatum The show's producers have previously decided to salary cutbacks, but a number of them curently have deals including compensation from back-finish profits. The deadline - Friday at noon - for Fox's ultimatum for that cast to go ahead and take pay cut or even the show is going to be canceled has transpired, without response in the stars or even the network.

Everybody's a critic

If there's one thing film students love more than watching movies, it's sharing their opinions of movies. Just Seen It, started by recent U. of Southern California film school graduate David Freedman, allows a team of recent USC grads and current masters and doctorate film students to do just that. The Just Seen It group writes, shoots and produces short reviews of films and TV shows a la Gene Siskel, Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper's "At the Movies." Putting a contempo spin on those shows, Just Seen It caters to a younger demo with online video reviews and a three-part rating system: see it, stream it or skip it. Shot in the way you'd expect film students to break down a movie they've just seen -- over drinks with a few close friends -- Just Seen It reviews major movies and new TV shows and champions "hidden gems," lesser-known shows and films near and dear to their hearts. Some recent reviews include "Moneyball," which earned a "See It!" and "Contagion," which got a "Stream It!" In December, Freedman, who now works for Bill Mechanic's Pandemonium shingle, and his friends were looking to fill the void left by the now-defunct "At the Movies." There "wasn't a really intelligent and entertaining and contentions movie show," on TV, he said. They shopped the idea for a Just Seen It TV show around and found a cable network that was interested. The net eventually backed out, but Freedman and his friends didn't give up. Now JustSeenIt.com has about 40,000 hits per week, 500 registered users, and the team just posted the 100th review to the site. Though the Internet is home to Just Seen It for now, Freedman one day hopes to see Just Seen It on TV. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Antoine Fuqua in foretells helm 'Hunter Killer'

With multiple movies in development. Antoine Fuqua is hardly hard-up for work, but he's still looking for a greenlight which has evaded him so far. The "Brooklyn's Finest" director might be a measure nearer to finding his next feature project, as he's in final discussions to accept helm of Relativity Media's "Hunter Killer."In line with the novel "Firing Point" by George Wallace and Don Keith, story follows an untested submarine captain who must make use of a Navy SEAL team to save Russia's leader, taken prisoner throughout a military coup. The 2 sides synergy to prevent a rogue Russian general from stimulating World War III. Script was compiled by Jamie Moss, John Kolvenbach and Arne Schmidt.Original Film's Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe are creating with Relativity Boss Ryan Kavanaugh. Relativity's Tucker Tooley assists as professional produce the pic, that is specific to begin production this winter. Fuqua might be probably the most searched for-after company directors in Hollywood but his projects keep stalling out. He'd been looking to start production around the Eminem-brought boxing movie "Southpaw" in The month of january, but DreamWorks drawn the plug around the picture in August, and also the filmmakers have reached the entire process of shopping the project with other galleries. Helmer was designed to spend the summer time shooting Morgan Creek's Tupac Shakur biopic but that film still has not found its lead, and Fuqua is no more mounted on direct. In This summer, Fuqua signed onto direct an adaptation of John Huddy's non-fiction book "Storming Vegas" for Summit Entertainment, that also courted him to direct its jailbreak drama "The Tomb." He seemed to be within the mix to direct both "Wolverine" follow up and "Die Hard 5" for twentieth century Fox, but lost individuals high-profile gigs to James Mangold and John Moore, correspondingly. In November 2010, Fuqua started settling to direct the comic adaptation "Afterburn" for Relativity, though there has not been any movement around the project since that time. Most lately, CAA-repped Fuqua signed onto direct an element-length documentary about Dying Row Records co-founder Suge Dark night for Showtime. Contact Shaun Sneider at shaun.sneider@variety.com

REVIEW: Machine Gun Preacher Fails as a Tale of Rebirth, Redemption and Kicking Ass

There’s a theoretical sweet spot to be found for Machine Gun Preacher — that of the multi-quadrant film, as the marketers say. It aims to be a hard-charging actioner that’s also a based-on-a-true-story tale of rebirth and uplift; an earnest, somber look at conflicts in Sudan that’s simultaneously a faith-centric, family-oriented redemption song. Directed by Marc Forster (of, appropriately enough, Quantum of Solace and Finding Neverland) from a screenplay by Jason Keller (who’s also credited as one of the writers on Tarsem Singh’s upcoming take on Snow White), Machine Gun Preacher always seems aware that it’s working off ripe material, but can’t fit it into beats that work on-screen. And really, what could be riper for adaptation than the life of Sam Childers, a onetime biker gang member who finds religion, starts his own church, builds an orphanage just north of the Ugandan border and defends it from attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army using the weapons expertise he learned while holding up drug dens? The man the locals start referring to in hushed tones as “the white preacher,” a term that’s a twist on the one used for professional big-game hunters in the colonial days, should be an irresistible figure, the unlikely do-gooder in a desperate situation. But Machine Gun Preacher doesn’t allow him moments of triumph — it’s a struggle throughout, which may be truer to life but makes for a wearying middlebrow movie that doesn’t make its days of self-improvement and altruism seem any brighter than its days of smack addiction and violence. Gerard Butler, who’s honed his screen persona as a brutish, charismatic jerk, isn’t a bad fit for the role of Sam, even if he’s more believable spraying bullets and stabbing hitchhikers than he is delivering a sermon. He’s got the swagger of someone who doesn’t expect to be messed with from the moment he first appears on-screen, on his way to being released from prison, his wife Lynn (Michelle Monaghan) waiting to pick him up outside. Since he’s been gone, Lynn’s discovered Jesus and given up stripping, and Sam finds to his dismay that the trailer in which the two live with their daughter Paige (Ryan Campos when younger, Madeline Carroll as a tween) is free of cigarettes and beer. Sam’s not so quick to come to God — he falls back easily into his old biker life, reconnecting with his friend Donnie (the always welcome Michael Shannon, so bug-eyed in his early scenes he’s almost a cartoon character), shooting up in bathrooms, waking up on the floor amidst beer bottles, Paige playing nearby. When he does get baptized, with Lynn and his mother, Daisy (Kathy Baker), looking at him beseechingly until he goes up, it’s not an ecstatic moment, just another milestone in a shifting life. While there’s something to be said for Machine Gun Preacher’s reluctance to dramatize itself along the lines of the typical biopic arc it theoretically follows, it makes the changes taking place in its main character difficult to discern until he abruptly acts on them. Sam’s decision to go to Africa for a few weeks of aid work, prompted by a guest speaker from Uganda appearing at the family’s church, comes as a surprise to his family and to the audience, who haven’t been given many clues as to the depth of his religious convictions. After witnessing atrocities on that trip, including a woman whose lips were cut off by rebels for talking back and a little boy whose legs are blown off by a mine, Sam comes back possessed by a desire to build both a church near his home and an orphanage in Africa that seems manic and a little worrying instead of inspired, a reaction reinforced by the cautiousness of Lynn’s support. Because Machine Gun Preacher chugs along like a relay race instead of coming to a point of crescendo, it’s easier to wonder what it’s actually about: Is Sam heroic for what he does or nave and presumptuous? Does he get mired in the impossibility of saving everyone from the heinousness of what’s happening in the area or has he always just been an asshole with violent tendencies underneath? These ambiguities don’t seem intentional, they seem like indecisiveness, like signs of a film in need of either more focus or less material. When Sam first picks up a gun and blasts rebels attacking the orphanage like Rambo by way of the Peace Corps, it should be the meeting of the film’s two halves, of his biker background and his newfound good intentions coming together — the machine gun preacher, a graphic-novel-worthy character come to life. But that turns into a meditation on the downhill slope of violence that is, given the context, a little irrational, and from there to a portrait of depression brought on by having to choose whom to help and risk letting others die. Films based on true stories often suffer from being made too neat, but in this case some tidying up was called for. Then what should have been a solid, gripping story wouldn’t have ended with an ellipsis and a shrug.

REC 3: Genesis teaser trailer creeps online

The very first teaser trailer for The spanish language horror [REC]³ Génesis has made an appearance online at ShockTillYouDrop. It is a cleverly done 50-second tease, spun around a neat twist around the usually yawnsome wedding photos montage before ejaculating having a torrent of gore. One things without a doubt, this looks fairly dissimilar to the sooner [REC] movies, each of which were set in a infected apartment block. That one is directed by Paco Plaza, who co-directed the sooner instalments with Jaume Balagueró, and it is stated to contain prequel elements (unsurprising considering the fact that subtitle).Additionally, it appears to possess moved from the found-footage format: does it still have the ability to create the same concentration of dread with no first-person gimmick?Browse the teaser here: [REC]³ Génesis is anticipated to spread out in The country in March 2012.Balagueró will direct final chapter [REC]: Apocalypse, going to be out later the coming year.

The Before party

Jeffrey Katzenberg with Neil Patrick Harris and David Burke GALLERY: The Evening Before partyThe setting is elegant, the meals divine and also the swag impressive. However ,, it is the hobnobbing which makes the Evening Before party the can't-miss affair from the pre-Emmy social swirl. The 5th annual event, raising $1.5 million for that Film and tv Fund, came its usually eclectic guest listing of executives, talent, tenpercenters along with other bizzers on Saturday towards the Lawn at Century Park.Showing sponsors Target, Hewlett packard, People and Revlon stored partygoers entertained with cubicles featuring games and free gifts (Target's Missoni collection giveaways were a significant hit). However the most fun only at that government-formed outside party space was watching for interesting couplings -- for example Jim Parsons giving Edie Falco a bear hug as she showed up, or Margo Martindale within an animated conversation with Leslie Bibb, or J.J. Abrams and Conan O'Brien discussing deep ideas, or Eric Stonestreet and John Stamos getting fun.But even just in this high-powered group, there have been breakouts of fandemonium. "OK, you are awesome," a lady gushed to Aziz Ansari because the "Parks and Entertainment" star made his way with the crowd. "Large Bang Theory" professional producer Bill Prady confessed to some "total fanboy moment" because he and "Large Bang" trouper Kunal Nayyar anxiously waited outdoors the men's room for the opportunity to shake hands with "Bet on Thrones" thesp Jon Snow. Megan Fox on Shia LaBeouf, Her Public Image and Starting Over With 'Friends With Kids'

"I love Shia to death," said Megan Fox to Moviefone in Toronto over the weekend. "I love him unconditionally." Those don't sound like the words of someone who has been "hit hard," as Fox said, by the principal players associated with 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' -- the summer blockbuster that very famously didn't feature the former franchise co-star. While Shia LaBeouf and Michael Bay piled on during the press rounds for 'Transformers,' Fox remained silent. That's about to change. In a way, Megan Fox is trying to start over, and her role in the new indie ensemble comedy 'Friends With Kids' -- which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival -- is an interesting choice. Fox is well aware of her image as a pin-up girl -- she refers to her own public image as "a robot" -- and is media savvy enough to know that that image hasn't always been a hindrance. Moviefone spoke to a candid and engaging Fox in Toronto about 'Friends With Kids' (she plays Mary Jane, Adam Scott's younger girlfriend in the new comedy), her public image, the beating she's taken in the press, and why she didn't defend herself. And, yes, she revealed if she's seen 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon.' Moviefone: I literally just walked out of 'Friends With Kids.' I haven't had any time to write questions and I can't even read my notes. Megan Fox: They're really sloppy. You have very sloppy handwriting. That's indicative of something. Like, what's this word? "Pun"? What would that even mean? Why would I write down "pun"? I'm not sure. Anyway ... we'll see how this goes. That's like a psychiatric emphasis of when you post just random words -- free write. Then you read it and you're like, "Wow, what is wrong with me?" I liked your movie. Thank you. You know what I liked about it? Your character is not a jerk. That's true. She's not a jerk. I mean, she's not super-sweet, either, but she's not a jerk or an assh*le. That wouldn't fit with Adam's character. They just wouldn't make sense. Was that important for you? I mean, I never once thought, Why would he ever be with her? She's mean. Yes, that was the idea. We didn't want Mary Jane to be mean. I've never actually played a mean character -- well, besides Jennifer in 'Jennifer's Body,' who hates men. But, yeah, obviously Adam is so fun to watch and he's so likable, you wouldn't want to see Adam with someone who is mean to him for a second. You would hate that person because he's just so wonderful. So it's just more that she was there at two different points in their life. Looking at your career, I feel this is a very good role for you. Let me preface that by saying that I have no idea what I'm talking about. People have said that before. I get what you're saying -- I think I get what you're saying. This role seems to ... Makes me seem human? I wouldn't put it that way. But after the kerfuffles of the past, you are playing a normal person in this as part of an ensemble. Does that make sense? Yes. Was that your plan? I always want to be a part of ensembles. Besides it feeling safer, I think it's a more fun environment to work in. To have a bunch of people collaborating on something, it takes the pressure off of each individual. Aside from Jen, obviously who wrote and directed and is starring in it. She had to carry the burden on her shoulders. But I think these films have turned out to be the most enjoyable to work on ... for me. It's interesting that you said "feel more human." Explain that. That's the reviews I took from my inner circle. That's how they phrase it. I just think the idea is that because most of the way that people have seen me, it's the glorified pin-up girl with motorcycle boots who is also fighting to save the world. It's not necessarily someone who you connect with because they're not real people necessarily who exist like that -- the glossy lips in the middle of the desert. In 'Jennifer's Body' I was this crazy -- it's this wonderful Diablo Cody script, but it's so kooky and so weird and I was eating people. It's just a very strange movie. You don't necessarily see the human side of whoever is playing that person. And I just think the media, in general, I just don't really get portrayed as someone who has feelings or who is sympathetic. Or I sort of am portrayed as this -- I feel -- like a self-absorbed ice queen. Maybe. And I think the people who see me in a role that allows me to be more human -- I don't know another word to use to describe it -- is why people are saying it's a good move to have done. It's also interesting that you said that you think people don't think you have feelings. But that whole image, is that a help or a hindrance for you? It's both, at times. I mean, sometimes I feel like it's a help because you can pretend that you just have this shield around you at all times. For the most part I'm really strong with how much bullsh*t I had piled upon me for so long. But, you know, I care about people. I care about my life and I love people. I'm not this robot. I feel people think I'm almost like a robot -- like an android. And that I'm all about me and my thoughts are all about me. That I want to be famous. I know one thing I've heard a lot is, "Does she say the things that she says because she wants attention? It's attention-seeking." But I always felt like, if that were the case, wouldn't I display some sort of attention-seeking behavior, which I've never done. I've always tried to live a really normal, private, quiet life. So I just think I've always really allowed room for the media to sort of chop my words and put their own narrative on it and create this salacious sound bite that goes everywhere. And because of that I feel like people just have no idea what I'm like or who I am. I feel like it's a mystery. Which is OK. Is that really a bad thing? It could be a good thing. But obviously there are times when you struggle with it because being misunderstood 90 percent of the time is difficult because you want to clarify. But you deal with it. With the recent Shia Labeouf interview and the 'Transformers' situation, why didn't you clarify or defend yourself? I didn't want to talk about it while they're on the press tour because I didn't want to try to throw mud at them. I didn't want that movie to suffer. Especially because I love Shia. I wanted that movie to do well for him. I didn't want to have this big media war over something that really was so silly and it would have just been my ego needing to engage in a war, at that point. Of course, there will be a time when I want to tell my side of the story. I just don't feel it was appropriate while they were promoting the movie. Are you saying that was a no-win situation? Right. Like, "She's trying to take away from the movie." So it was best to let them say what they were going to say. It's fine. With everything that happened with the 'Transformers 3' situation with you ... With what you read in the press. Well, yes. And I get why you wouldn't be happy, but at the same time I'd kind of want to know how the story, the movie itself, ends. Did you see 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'? I haven't seen it yet, but I will see it. I mean, if they hadn't been hitting me so hard on the press tour, I would have gone to the theater. But I felt like that would have been a disaster: Me sitting with a packed theater of people watching the movie. So I didn't go. I mean, I have nothing against watching it. And I love Shia to death; I love him unconditionally. And I love that crew. I'm really close to the hair, makeup and wardrobe that made that movie. I want to see it for them. I know it looked amazing in the trailer. Out of all three trailers, that was the trailer that I was like, "Wow, sh*t, this is a huge movie." So I think it will be an interesting, fun thing to watch, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm picturing the blog headlines, "Megan Fox Watches 'Transformers'!" I couldn't do it. Then that would turn into not just me wanting to see the movie, that would have been like, "She's trying to take attention from the movie by being at the theater when it's released." It's a lose-lose. So I'll just watch it on Netflix back home. You brought up a good point earlier about the fact that, other than your interviews, you've stayed out of the spotlight. So why do you think it's sensationalized? Why do they sensationalize my comments? No, why do they sensationalize your life? [Sighs] That's a question I sit and I ponder often. And journalists sit with me and I'm always like this with whomever I talk to. That's sort of the most ... like the feeling of betrayal -- that you have as a celebrity or an actor or entertainer -- I think comes from meeting with journalists and feeling like, Hey, I had a good conversation with you, then you read the article and it's like, Wow! Well, that's not the angle that I thought you were going to take. You need to sell this magazine, I understand, but, sh*t, I just didn't realize it was going to go in that direction. So you have to become a little bit jaded with press in that sense. You have to just guard yourself, because you never know what people are going to do. Like I said, I used to have a lot of fun in interviews -- I'd be playful, I'd be sarcastic. But there's too much room for someone to take what I was saying and cut it up, rearrange it, and throw it on 'Extra.' It's insane. You have to be really strong. You have to just shut yourself off to the criticism at some point. So people keep trying to beat me down. I thought about that the other day, that I feel like people have tried so hard to break me ... and I won't break. So they just keep trying. So is 'Friends With Kids' a calculated move? So people will stop thinking of you in this way? I definitely think it helps with doing other comedies. I mean, from working with Jen [Westfeldt] and Jon [Hamm] and everyone involved, Judd [Apatow] called them to ask, "Hey, what was she like on set? How was it? How was the experience?" Because they had a good experience with me, that caused Judd to want to put me in his movie. So it's opened doors that way. I love working on comedy film sets. They have been the most wonderful experiences and they are nice, kind, fun people. So it's a genre I like to be in. And you finished filming 'The Dictator.' It's done. And it's going to be funny. I mean, I'm not saying my stuff, but the movie. And Sacha is great in it. So is this your future -- comedies? [Laughs] We'll see. You can contact Mike Ryan directly on Twitter.
